How to size a rug

The most common mistake is buying small. Here's the rule we give everyone who asks.

Living room: The front legs of every seat stand on the rug. Not near it, on it. If the sofa and both chairs have their front feet on the rug, the room reads as one room.
Dining table: Measure the table and add 70 cm on every side. That's how far a chair moves back when someone stands up, so its back legs never catch on the edge.
Bedroom: A runner down each side, or one rug that starts two thirds of the way down the bed and runs past the foot.
